Neurodiversity Week 2024
In April, we celebrated AND Week (Autism,
Neurodiversity, and Down Syndrome), embracing the
theme, “Our school needs minds of all kinds.”
Throughout the week, we celebrated the unique
talents and contributions of our neurodiverse students
at DLSC.
The week kicked off with an inspiring session led by
Luis and his mother, Sandra, who shared insights
about Down Syndrome, emphasising the significance
of inclusivity and compassion with our 1st and TY
students.
Midweek, our homerooms hosted the second annual
Coffee Morning, where parents and families gathered
to applaud the achievements of our students.
The event featured captivating piano performances by
David and Travis, intriguing historical insights from
Alfie, notable spelling improvements demonstrated by
Peter, a culinary tutorial by Adam, and personal
anecdotes from Ethan about his experiences at the
Cosy Bean coffee shop. Rubin and Liam also shared
their journeys within our homerooms, making it a truly
uplifting morning.
Thursday brought a thought-provoking screening of
the RTE documentary, "Speechless," offering
profound insights into the life of nonverbal autistic
writer and poet, Fiacre Ryan. This emotional journey
underscored the importance of understanding
autism's multifaceted nature and the diverse ways it
manifests in individuals.
As the week drew to a close, students united to
recreate the rainbow infinity symbol, symbolising the
infinite diversity of the human mind. This emblem
serves as a powerful reminder of our commitment to
inclusivity and embracing neurodiversity at DLSC.
In celebrating all minds, we reaffirm our dedication to
fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for
every student.
