Subject Choice Week
By Ms M Fitzpatrick
Our Transition Years had a busy week leading up to their Leaving Cert subject
choice on the 14th of March.
As part of the Annual Subject Choice week, the school has aimed to best inform and
help not only TYs, but the school community as a whole, in career prospects and
the Leaving Cert Curriculum.
The three TY classes have had the opportunity to learn more about each subject by
presentations delivered by our LC subject teachers on their respective subjects. The
lectures outlined the coursework, requirements and options out of school for
students.
On Tuesday, Transition Year students sat a CAT4 Aptitude test, to assess each
student's verbal/ non-verbal reasoning, quantitative, spatial etc. ability. Over the
coming weeks, students would gain their results back by Mrs. Fitzpatrick, alongside
insight and be counselled on which subjects they would best perform in for their
Leaving Certificate.
The 6th of March would prove another eventful day, as Mrs. Fitzpatrick provided
valuable information through a presentation focused on college courses and
professional prospects after school. This presentation detailed the paths which each
subject would provide for students, as well as an overview of course requirements
and different colleges in Dublin and Ireland as a whole.
Finally, to end the week with a highlight, with our first Careers Fair since Covid took
place. The evening was an outstanding success, with students from all year groups
attending the fair and learning about our community and friends of the school's
career paths, experiences and insights into their respective fields.
A multitude of professions were showcased throughout the Assembly Hall –
Doctors, Engineers, Firefighters – it is safe to say students were able to gain the
most out of this incredible experience.
The fair is planned to take place every 2 years, so our current Transition Years will
get another opportunity to widen their horizons and chase their ambitions before
their final examinations.
