The Senior Debate team, consisting of 5th year
students John Cleary, Luca Zani, Anthony Downes,
Breandan McGarry and David Boyce took part in two
Secondary School Mace Debating competitions last
month.

First up was the PhilSoc Debate Mace in Trinity
College on 18th February, where some interesting
motions were debated such as ‘This House would ban
negative campaigning’, ‘This House supports the
creation of a single, all-Ireland Football Association’
and ‘ Dumbo should fly away and leave the circus.’
The standard of competition was very high and
particular congratulations to Luca Zani who qualified
and then won the Silver Final.

The following weekend, the Debate Team were in
action again, this time at the L&H Schools Mace in
UCD, with tough motions around the topics of
Individual’s uniqueness and Ecoterrorism. Again a
very high standard of debating from all schools and
the teams did a fantastic job, gaining a huge amount
of debating experience.

DLSC Debate Club continues to meet every Thursday
lunchtime in Ms Lowry’s classroom. Going forward we
hope to enter more competitions outside of school.
