Green Schools News
What is Green Schools?
Green-Schools is Ireland’s leading environmental management and education programme for schools.
Promoting long-term, whole-school action for the environment Green-Schools is a student-led
programme with involvement from the wider community. The programme is operated and coordinated
by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce (FEE member for Ireland).
We are very proud to have achieved the flags for
Litter and Waste, Energy and Water. Every two
years we maintain our current flags while we
work on a new theme. Our Green Schools
Committee is made up of students from a variety
of years in the school and teachers. In May we
were presented with our Water Flag. We focused
on water conservation. The Green Schools
Committee provided education to the school
community about how to save water in everyday
life. We decided to invest in a water foundation
and reusable water bottles for the students and
staff in the school. We introduced many
initiatives to save water- Well done to all the
committee members!
Our next Theme is Travel. We are currently
working on initiatives to encourage our school
community to travel in a more sustainable way
to school.
We completed a walkability audit in our local
area and tested the speed of the cars in the area!
We are currently surveying our school and will
set our targets based on these results.
New Trees for De La Salle College
Our TY gardening class worked hard collecting
newspaper tokens to receive free trees for our
school from the Native Woodland Trust. Our
students are working on off-setting our Carbon
footprint by planting trees on our school
grounds. So far we have planted over 300 trees
and plants! Thanks to the Native Woodland
trust for sending in the trees and our planting
guide!
