1st Year 2024
By Mr T Cronin
What a year it has been for the First Year class of 23/24. As we all say goodbye for the summer,
it is wonderful to see how the boys and girls have become so entwined in the school community
and they have brought so much energy and fun to the halls of De La Salle College, Churchtown.
The end of year Student Awards Ceremony highlighted the wonderful achievements of the boys
and girls and it was difficult for teachers to single out any one student in their subject as the
standard, diligence and enthusiasm for learning was truly great all year. It was so heartening that
so many First Years attended after school study and it is brilliant to see that these good habits
have formed so early in their academic career. They are an ambitious group and we look forward
to seeing their progress in Second Year and I am sure they will continue to support and push
each other next year.
The boys and girls of First Year were an integral part of school life. Many First Year students
enjoyed the numerous Lunchtime Clubs and we have so many talented students. Musicians,
actors, designers and debaters, the future is bright.
It was also wonderful that nearly all First Year students represented the school in our famous
Wine and Gold. The playing pitches and sports hall were packed each week with First Year
students taking part in the many sports on offer. Whether to play competitively or just to keep
active, what was most evident was the great fun that was had.
The First Year Boys Rugby Team had our best year in a long time and the girls team were
amazing considering it was the first time for many of the girls to play rugby. Faye Horan was
awarded player of the tournament when the girls took part in the Leinster Rugby blitz. The
football teams were super competitive, the boys reaching a semi-final and the girls finished off
the season by winning the annual De La Salle Football Tournament.
Badminton and basketball were popular sports for the First Year boys and girls and table tennis
goes from strength to strength. I am sure with continued participation we will see many
achievements from this group of talented athletes.
